Second IEC Visa to Canada – A 12 Month ‘Extension’

IEC Visa Canada

Until recently, the maximum amount of time you could spend on an IEC Working Holiday visa to Canada was 24 months. However, in 2024, certain countries made an agreement allowing for an extra 12 months extension to be applied for. The U.K. and Canada have this option.

I have recently successfully activated my second IEC Visa giving me another 12 months in Canada. The process is not as smooth as you would think, so let’s dive into it!

IEC Visa 2nd Participation

As mentioned, there was a recent change to the IEC Visa program, allowing applicants form certain countries to apply twice in the same category. To check your eligibility, you can visit the IRCC link – note that some countries also have waiting periods preventing back-to-back applications.

The wording around an ‘extension’ is confusing. When you apply for the extra 12 months, it is a completely new application and you need to go back into the IEC pool in the same manner as for the 2 year visa. It is completely separate but the process is a duplication of when you applied before. Don’t stress! I have made a post detailing how I went through the IEC process that you can follow.

You will therefore need to meet the same eligibility requirements as for your previous application. These include:

  • Still being within the eligible age range of 18-35 at the time of applying.
  • Applying from a country that allows a second application (check here!)
  • Having all the required documentation, including proof of funds and insurance.

Make sure to get a new police report from your home country. The Police Certificate must have been issued withing 6-months of when you apply for IEC. In this case, it will likely have expired from when you did the first application 2 years ago.

If you are wanting to continue your life in Canada without a break, make sure to apply for the second term a few months before the first expires. You don’t want the stress of waiting for approval in the final week or two. It is not worth the headache.

How do I activate my new IEC Visa?

So you have successfully been approved for your second IEC Visa term – now what? Unfortunately, it doesn’t just start the moment your old visa expires. You have to manually activate it at an international border.

Here’s what I did:

My visa expired on May 8th 2025. I made the choice was to fly home to the U.K. on May 7th for a vacation, taking a trip to see family just before my old visa expired. On May 12th I returned to Canada with my new Port of Entry (POE) document in hand ready to activate.

I told the border officer in at Pearson Airport in Toronto that I needed to activate an IEC Visa Work Permit, and he directed me to immigration. The queue lasted for over an hour, but eventually I was seen. I was asked for my passport, POE document and proof of my insurance. Also a couple of questions about where I was living and my work. The whole process took less than 5 minutes. If you have all your documents there is no reason to be stressed – although I was definitely nervous!

A Word on ‘Flag-poling’ –

I’m sure if you are in IEC groups on social media or been researching online, you will have seen lots of mentions of ‘flag-poling’. In simple terms, flag-poling is simply foreign nationals like myself with a temporary visa leaving Canada and immediately re-entering on the same day. This could be done by driving across the US border and back, for example.

This process was perfectly legal until recently, December 2024, when it was stopped. The reason given was that the ‘practice has taken up significant resources at the border, diverting Canadian and American officers away from important enforcement activities and has contributed to wait times for cross-border travelers’.

So what does this mean for you and I? Well, if you are looking to activate a second IEC Visa like I did, you must now fly out, wait 24 hours, and then fly back into Canada. This can be done through any international airport, so many people have chosen the USA or Mexico.  Treat yourself to a weekend away in Cancun, or fly home to see family. Don’t get caught out by trying to bend the rules. The last thing you want is to be stuck somewhere – it’s not worth the risk.

Hopefully that covers all the bases on getting your second IEC Visa approved and activated. If you have any questions on anything in this post, please do reach out. There were many times when I was confused and wished I had someone to ask. I’m more than happy to help.

Enjoy your extra 12 months in Canada!
